How mentoring works

  1. A mentor for each classA class coordinator maintains the mentoring sheet for each term.
  2. Monthly student meetingsMentors discuss academic progress and the guidance needed by each student.
  3. Identify academic support needsSPI, backlogs and mid-semester performance help identify students who need additional guidance.
  4. Review progressMentors record weak-student GTU results and review progress in subsequent terms.

Academic guidance and follow-up

91%mentoring records include backlog guidance
659records include the detention rule
141weak musters
3,691weak student–subject entries

The presentation reports that 34% of the weak student–subject entries passed GTU in the same term. This is a student–subject measure, rather than a percentage of unique students.

Progress recorded in the mentoring study

Students with SPI below 5 who improved next term
53%
Students with SPI below 3 who improved next term
61%
Initially weak students who reached the final semester
32%

The first two percentages concern separate SPI groups. Of 509 students, 343 were weak at first mentoring; 110 of those 343 reached the final semester (32%, rounded). These observations do not by themselves establish that mentoring caused the improvements.

Student feedback and action

144facility feedback responses
307industrial-visit responses
95webinar responses
42computer-training responses

The feedback process uses a five-point Google Form, workbook analysis, identification of weaker-rated items, an action-taken report and follow-up for the next programme.

Facility feedback

15 statements and 144 responses, with an overall mean of 3.58 out of 5 for terms 241 and 242, as reported in the presentation.

Areas covered by action reports

Wi-Fi, toilets, drinking water, sports, placement notices, greenery and cleanliness.

Entrepreneurship feedback

The Idea2Impact session recorded a mean rating of 3.81 out of 5; 65.3% of answers were rated 4 or 5.
